\font\englfont=cmr8\englfont % need small english font for this song %Subject: Marathi "ghazals" - lyrics %In this article, I am posting the lyrics (and their literal English meanings) %of two Marathi songs. [Ed: in m1.s and m2.s] %To me, these songs represent the Marathi %version of the "ghazal" - they seem to satisfy the necessary constraints %i.e. each song is a series of couplets based on a single theme/emotion. %Also, each couplet %is complete by itself. However, you all can decide for yourselves if they are %"ghazals" or not. %(I am posting only the literal meanings of the words. % Anyone with a better grasp of either language is welcome to improve on these. %I leave the interpretation to each reader's own imagination) %Not coincindentally, I suppose, both these songs have been written by the same %person - Suresh Bhat. %I am sure all of you (who listen to Marathi songs) must have heard the first %one (happens to be one of my favourites !). %Its music is by Hridayanath Mangeshkar and its most popular version is the %one sung by Asha Bhonsle. Her voice and HM's music really elevate the %beautiful lyrics to a higher plane. %Here's a perfect example of how good lyrics and good music combine to %make a whole which is greater than the sum of the parts (re: the discussion %sometime back on the net about Lyrics vs. Tune) %-------------------------------------------------------- %This second song is somewhat newer (I think) and may not be as well %known. Its music director is Sudhir Moghe and it has been sung by Shrikant %Pargaonkar. It also has a beautiful tune and is sung very well by SP. %The lyrics of this one, though, are less subtle (and hence to me, less %beautiful). Prelude: dÙK:acy:a v:aXðv:r g:av: t:Øz:ð l:ag:l:ð (along the path of sorrow, I passed your town) T:b:kl:ð n: p:ay: t:ri, eËdy: m:az:ð T:amb:l:ð (though my feet never paused, my heart stopped) v:ðeS:p:aeS: udas: hak t:ØJ:i B:ðXl:i (at the outskirts, your sad call met me) An: m:aeJ: p:ay:p:iX d:ðMy:at:Ün: s:aöRl:i % ## (not sure what this means !) ## (?? my wandering spilt through my eyes ??) sT:aey:: m:g: m:az:a j:iv: t:ØJy:a v:aXðv:r v:N:v:N:ðl: (then my being will roam in your path) An: m:aeJ: hak t:ØJy:a Aöt:rat: hÚrhÚrðl: (and my call will echo within you) 1) s:hz: kD:i t:Ü G:rat: l:av:S:il: s:aöz: v:at: (often times, you will light the evening lamp at home) m:az:ð hi m:n: et:T:ðc: jy::ðt:i s:h T:rT:rðl: (my mind, too, will flicker there, along with the flame) 2) j:ðövha t:Ü n:ahS:il:, dp:üN:at: p:ahS:il:, (when you bathe and look in the mirror) m:az:ð Aest:tv: t:ØJy:a A:s:p:as: drv:Lðl: (my spirit will be hovering around you) 3) j:ðövha ra*:i kÙS:it:, m:az:ð G:ðS:il: g:it:, (when at night in bed, you will remember my song) m:az:ð t:a,Ny: t:ØJy:a g:a*:at:Ün: g:ØN:g:ØN:ðl: (my youth will hum through your voice) 4) m:g: s:ØXðl: m:öd m:öd, v:as:öet:k p:v:n: D:Øöd (then there will be a gentle, fragrant, intoxicating breeze) m:az:ð A:y:ØSy: t:ØJy:a Aög:N:at: Xp:Xp:ðl: (and my life will shower, drop by drop, in your garden) [ Filename: 2.s ]
